Beautiful synthetic magnetic rare earth nanomaterials

A team of researchers at the Virginia Commonwealth University claimed that they have synthesized a new type of magnetic material that is comparable in magnetic properties to rare earth permanent magnetic materials and is expected to reduce the dependence on rare earth resources in industrial production. Shiv Carner, professor of the School of Physics and Humanities at Virginia Commonwealth University responsible for the study, said that the discovery opened up a new path for artificial new materials to catch up with conventional permanent magnetic materials. Related papers were published in the latest issue of Applied Physics Letters.

This new material consists of iron nanoparticles and magnetic cobalt and carbon nanoparticles, the latter two being about 5 nanometers in size. Experiments have shown that this material is completely comparable to conventional permanent magnet materials made of rare earth in terms of magnetic properties. In addition, this material can store information at a high temperature of 516.85 degrees Celsius, has good heat resistance and stability, and has the characteristics of long-range order, also has potential application value in data storage applications.

Rare earth has the reputation of “industrial vitamins” and is now an extremely important strategic resource with wide application value in petroleum, chemical, metallurgy, textile and other fields. Especially those permanent magnet materials made of rare earths are indispensable for industries such as communications, electronics and automobile manufacturing. In addition, with the emergence and rapid development of the green technology market, the market for pure electric and hybrid electric vehicles, direct drive wind generator power systems, and energy storage systems is growing, and the demand for permanent magnetic materials and rare earth resources will also increase. With the increase, the shortage of resources has become increasingly prominent.

The paper's co-author and postdoctoral fellow at Virginia Commonwealth University, Ahmed El-Gentti, said that this is an important finding for solving the shortage of rare earth resources. Professor Everett Carpenter, who heads the Nanoscience and nanotechnology project at the university, said that this new material has shown many outstanding characteristics, and in some respects even exceeds the traditional permanent magnetic material.
