Why does the grease become hard

Why does the grease harden?

The reason for the formation of hard lumps in grease-lubricated bearings is usually due to the separation of the oil in the grease from the thickener. Under normal circumstances, a small amount of oil will precipitate out of the grease over time, and a large amount of premature grease precipitation will cause it to become significantly harder. In some cases, the life cycle of the grease is too long There will be hardening, and the solution is to shorten the life cycle of the fat, generally about 6 months to one year. If half of the base oil in the grease is lost, the grease should also be replaced in time.

The high temperature caused by excessive use of the equipment, or the high heat caused by other reasons, will also make the grease hard. Whatever the reason, heat will cause excessive loss of oil from the thickener, and can accelerate the oxidation of the oil, which will make the grease in the bearing hard. The large radius and high speed bearings will produce a high centrifugal force. The grease can be separated into oil, causing the grease to harden.

Bearing should not add too much grease

We know that grease has good adhesion, abrasion resistance, temperature resistance, rust resistance and lubricity, can improve high temperature oxidation resistance, delay aging, dissolve carbon deposits, prevent metal abrasive debris and oil from coalescence , Improve the wear resistance, pressure resistance and corrosion resistance of the machine.

After understanding the movement of grease in the bearing, it is natural to conclude that the grease in the bearing should not be excessive. The excess grease is not only wasteful but also harmful. The higher the speed of the bearing, the greater the harm. The greater the amount of grease filled, the greater the friction torque. For the same filling amount, the friction torque of sealed bearings is greater than that of open bearings. After the grease filling amount is equivalent to 60% of the internal volume of the bearing, the friction torque no longer increases significantly. This is because most of the grease in the open bearings has been squeezed out, and the grease in the sealed bearings has also been lost.

As the amount of grease filled increases, the bearing temperature rises linearly. With the same filling amount, the temperature rise of the sealed bearing is higher than that of the open bearing.

It is generally believed that the amount of grease filled in sealed rolling bearings should not exceed 50% of the internal space at most. Shawki and Mokhtar's tests show that ball bearings are most suitable from 20% to 30%.

Optical Lenses are optical components designed to focus or diverge light. Optical Lenses, which may consist of a single or multiple elements, are used in a wide variety of applications from microscopy to laser processing.
