Researchers at the University of Utah recently announced that they have designed a multicolor thin layer that can collect light. The researchers pointed out that the transparent glass or plastic layer is incorporated into the solar panel coverslip, which can promote the overall conversion efficiency of solar cells to 50%.

Traditional solar cells can only effectively absorb narrow-band light and cannot absorb light from other wavelengths. In this new study, Rajesh Menon, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, and Peng Wang, electrical engineering graduate student, designed a multicolor layer that can promote more wavelengths of light to be absorbed by photovoltaic cells, thereby increasing the conversion efficiency of photovoltaic cells. 16 %.

The researchers also designed a multicolor computer simulator that was placed on a solar cell (with eight different absorber layers). Experiments show that the theoretical conversion efficiency of photovoltaic cells is 50% higher.

“These colors can be absorbed by the right solar cells, which improves battery efficiency without increasing costs,” Menon said.

Menon said that the multicolor layer is 10 mm long and 50 mm wide, and it is equipped with a 3 μm wide groove to reflect the incoming light. The multicolor layer is mainly manufactured by theoretical photolithography. However, the manufacturing cost is not expensive, just create a multi-color mold and then stamp it out like a DVD.

According to Menon, the University of Utah will work together with solar cell manufacturers to plan to produce such high-efficiency solar cells in the next 5-10 years.
