British scientists invent the most transparent and lightweight conductive materials

Beijing May 22 news, the research team of the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom invented the most transparent, lightweight and flexible conductive materials. This material, called GraphExeter, will revolutionize the creation of wearable electronics such as clothing with computers, phones, and MP3 players.

GraphExeter can also be used to create "smart" mirrors or windows with computer interaction. Because this material is transparent in a variety of spectra, this will increase solar panel performance by more than 30%.

Graphexeter is made from graphene and is more flexible than the current conductive material indium tin oxide (ITO), which is currently used primarily in the electronics industry. The price of ITO is getting higher and higher. It is also a limited resource and is expected to be exhausted by 2017.

The results of the study have recently been published in the Leading Materials Science Journal (Advanced Materials).

Graphene is only one layer thick and is the thinnest conductive material. This material is very flexible and is the most solid material known in the world. Scientists and engineers have long attempted to use graphene on elastic electronic products, but their sheet resistance characteristics limit the conductive effect, so it is a challenge in application. Until now, no one has been able to create a viable alternative to ITO.

In order to make GraphExeter, the Ekster team sandwiches ferric chloride molecules between two layers of graphene. Ferric chloride can enhance the conductive effect of graphene without affecting the transparency of the material.

The new material was developed by the Graphene Science Center at the University of Exeter. The research team is currently developing a spray version of GraphExeter that will be applied directly to fabrics, mirrors and windows.

Research Principal Investigator Monika Kalasen of the University of Exeter stated: “GraphExeter can revolutionize the entire electronics industry.
