Ethanol separation dramatically increases the compression ratio from 10 to 13

Honda is developing a technology to separate ethanol from gasoline fuel containing ethanol. Honda hopes to differentiate the use of gasoline and ethanol by injecting high-octane ethanol in high-load areas and low-octane gasoline fuels in low-load areas in order to significantly increase the compression ratio of existing engines.

For example, after the engine with a compression ratio of 10 uses this technology, the compression ratio can be significantly increased to about 13. Honda considers the use of a separator in the tank (figure). Because it is based on the premise that it is applied to an existing spark ignition engine, this method is closer to practical use than the ethanol reforming technology envisaged for HCCI.

(a) In addition to Honda's upgrading technology, Honda is also developing a technology to separate ethanol from gasoline fuel containing ethanol and to increase the compression ratio by injecting gasoline separately. (b) Separators have been set up in the tank for research.

The separator separates the two compartments with a membrane. Developed by Honda and Japanese Insulators. The membrane has small holes close in size to the molecules. After injecting gasoline containing ethanol into one of the compartments, the ethanol passes through the small holes and flows into the other compartment decompressed by the air pump. This film is characterized by the use of hard inorganic materials to improve durability.

Honda is studying the application of this technology to the gasoline fuel (E10) containing 10% ethanol commonly used in the United States. It has been confirmed that the amount of ethanol in E10 is sufficient to meet the needs of the United States under the fuel efficiency test mode "US06".
