Renewable Energy reached the highest level of the year in 2010

Hekia Parata, Deputy Minister of Energy and Resources pointed out that last year, renewable energy provided 75% of the electricity demand, which is the highest annual level in nearly 12 years.

This is the information released today in the energy data file for 2011. It contains detailed explanations on the supply, transportation and use of all types of fuel in New Zealand. It also includes energy prices, international controls, and oil and gas reserves.

New Zealand's high level of renewable energy is mainly attributed to new wind and geothermal energy projects, as well as moderate rainfall.

Parata pointed out that we have made great progress in the development of all potential diversified energy combinations.

Wind power has grown by more than 25% since 2006. In 2010, geothermal power generation has increased by 21% compared with previous years, and the power supply for bioenergy, solar energy and marine energy generation has been steadily developing. We are approaching the goal step by step: By 2015, renewable energy resources can supply 90% of the electricity demand.

In March 2011, renewable energy provided 79% of total electricity demand.

Although the development of the renewable energy industry is moving forward, Parata said that in the foreseeable future, New Zealand will still need to continue to develop fossil fuels.

Last year, in order to provide determinism in the supply of electricity and additional supplies during peak periods, fossil-fuel power generation supplies 25% of electricity demand. The fossil fuel industry still plays an important role in energy supply, and it also contributes to the economy.

The government is taking a balanced approach to building sustainable energy and future resources.
